First Three Games

We started our first three games with three losses. It sounds sad, I know, but it really is nothing of the sort. We started off the season taking on defending state champions, Richmond, in a couple of games that were suited much more for a fire and a cup of cocoa than for softball. We dropped the first game 27-1 and the second 17-0. It really sounds a lot worse than it was when you write it down. We did a great job on the offensive side of things- only striking out once during the first game and a handful of times in the second. We put the ball in play a ton, but had a little bit of trouble turning hits into outs in the second game. Like I said, it was so cold that I was considering the fact that there was a good possibility my toes would fall off.

Today, we took on 2010 Western Maine Runners-Up, Buckfield. Last year, when we faced this team with this pitcher we left giving her the present of a perfect game. This year, nothing of the sort. The final score of the game was 17-4 (but, hey, we played 7 innings!). I pointed out to the girls that Buckfield gave up 4 runs to Richmond (remember, defending state champions) on Thursday and then 4 runs to us today- bodes well for our offense. We had a lot of really good successes like 2, count them 2, 1-2-3 innings (I love those), game time of approximately 1.5 hours (that's awesome), and some really solid offense and defense.

Kassie started out the game pitching and put in three really solid innings. We had some great defense all around, but particularly awesome were Abby's diving catch and Crash's pick off of a Buckfield player at third base. We also loved Blake's bare handed catch (ouch) and Ashley's knocking down line drives (way to keep it in front of you!). We had great at bats from Eliza (1-2 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored), Alex (2 RBIs) and Blake (2 RBIs). We had great baserunning from Bina (nice Pickle!) and Ryann (she can steal on anyone)!

Now, with three of our most difficult games of the season behind us, we're looking forward to the next stretch of long trips. I'm sure that if we keep our heads up and take everything one play at a time we will do just fine.

PS- did I mention it was BEAUTIFUL! today?

Thanks to our fans for all of the support today- you guys are the best!

It's All Coming Together!

Despite some rough patches and not nearly enough time outside, everything is coming together just in time for our opening games at Richmond on Saturday on April 16th.

We have a great team with great attitudes and great abilities. I can't wait to go to Richmond with all of you. :)

So We've Begun!

The first full fledged practice today was a reminder of how challenging it is to practice inside. Everyone did a great job and worked through all of the challenges thrown at them. Who knew that Fitness 15 would grow into Fitness 20 this year! We also are working on figuring out how to utilize the finite amount of space that we have in the gym. Today we focused on fielding grounders, hitting and an introduction to bunting. Tomorrow will bring us to some more infield drills complete with runners.

Our first game is coming right around the corner- 2 and a half weeks away! I hope everyone's gearing up for when the Vikings take on the Bobcats in Richmond on April 16th at 11:00 am.

Starting Up Again...

Pitchers and Catchers starts tomorrow (March 22)- and we all couldn't be more excited. I know that this time of year always makes me remember that spring is really just around the corner- even when we're getting a little dusting of snow (like tonight). Here's hoping that the field dries off quickly and we are able to get outside before we know it!

Splitting in Bingham

After a long, hot couple of games, we added an extra win to our collection.  Now we're 3-5 with 4 games left this season.  Go get 'em against Richmond on Friday and against Greenville a week from Saturday.

Everyone had a couple of fantastic games, but here are some highlights.  Alex had a beautiful triple with the bases loaded during game 1!  Alana, Eliza, Alex and more all hit the ball making really solid contact.  Alex also had 2 catches in center field during game 1.  During game 2, we really did a great job laying down bunts.  Ryann was her usual base running queen and we stole home on 2 separate occasions.  Rebecca had a great catch in right field during the bottom of the 7th inning and Alana made the final out by robbing a Cavalier of a hit with runners in scoring position.  Ashley was a brick wall behind the plate and the defense was just all-around fantastic, like usual.  Go Vikings!

Losing Like Winners

Taking the Lobster Boat home from Buckfield

Alana with the quick play.
Crash making another great stop.

Unfortunately we're on a little bit of a losing streak right now.  We dropped a couple of games at Buckfield on Tuesday: the first 9-1 and the second 12-0.  The games were much, much better than the scores have them sound.  We did a great job defensively fielding everything that Buckfield threw at us and we made a ton of contact off some very quality pitching.  Friday we went to Rangeley and played a wild and intense game that we dropped 13-14.  Everyone did a great job again in that game- and our bats really started to come alive.  Saturday we struggled to find the strike zone and dropped the game 17-4 after giving up 13 runs in the first inning.

I am so proud of the way the girls are handling this little slump that we're having.  It take a lot of self awareness to "lose like winners".  We're not going to let a few losses hold us back.  We know that every time we step out on the field we are doing the best we can and we are constantly growing and developing as a team.
